Compete to Win
Compete to Win!
I must confess that I am a competition junkie! I can turn the most menial task into a game of competition. I grew up playing football, baseball, basketball, and even took karate. Competition has been in my blood for as long as I can remember. I still love to play sports, although I am a little slower these days, but I also love to watch sports, especially college football. I enjoy watching two teams fiercely compete to score more points than their opponent.
The Christian life experiences competition too. Paul tells us to run the race that is marked out for us, and that, as we run we are to compete for the imperishable prize of Jesus Christ. We are to compete in such a way as to win. However, there is an opponent that wants us to keep us from running the race well and gaining the prize. We are in competition against the prince of the power of the air who is Satan the diabolical schemer and father of lies. He is sneaky and will use tricky and subtle schemes against us. He likes to bring about all kinds of little pleasures that compete for our highest reward in Jesus. He will bring about anything that will compete with our allegiance to Jesus. He is a worthy opponent. Therefore, what do you find in your life that competes with your allegiance and affections to Jesus the Savior? Here are a few that I have experienced and have observed in others.
2. Leisure – weekend vacations
3. Our kids travel sports
4. Extended family loyalties
This is certainly not an exhaustive list but some of the major factors I see in our society that competes for our allegiance to the Savior and his church? How are you competing in the Christian life? Are you all in, or are you distracted because other things are in competition?
Make it your aim to compete well! Don’t give into what Satan, and our current society, dictates as the norm. Live in light of the gospel and let the gospel become the norm for you and for me, as children of God. Satan is a worthy opponent but Jesus is already the victor! Remember that as you compete well for the upward call of God in Christ Jesus!
